Research

Accessible Software: Research at IBM focused on the creation of the accessibilityWorks software to provide on-the-fly transformations to create accessible Web pages, adapted to the specific needs of individual users. Technology for Aging: My research on supporting older adults began with Web accessibility, but has continued in various forms. Currently, this work forms the core of the UK Research Councils’ SiDE (Social Inclusion for the Digital Economy) Hub. In collaboration with a multidisciplinary team at Newcastle University, this has developed into a center of excellence for enabling digital access for older users with a particular emphasis on health care [see more…]

Education Technology: As Manager of the K-12 Collaborative Networking Group at IBM Research, I worked with teams on projects including NetVista [K12.net] (an IBM product enabling K-12 schools to inexpensively and safely access the Internet), the Authentic Assessment Tool (IBM software supporting rich, portfolio-based student evaluations) and, in collaboration with the Educational Testing Service [see more…]

Reading and Sign Language: My interests in psycholinguistics and communication converged during a postdoctoral fellowship at the Salk Institute’s Laboratory for Language and Cognitive Studies, and later at Haskins Laboratories at Yale University, where I conducted research on the acquisition and processing of American Sign Language (ASL) and reading by deaf children and adults [see more…]
