Purple Hairstreaks in Angus

The picture below shows a female Purple Hairstreak butterfly (Neozephyrus quercus) photographed at Barry Buddon near Dundee on 9 August 2009. This was apparently the first record of this species in Angus. However several colonies are now known in the county, including at Oak Wood, Ruthven (on the Perthshire border), at Barry Buddon and in Balgay Park in Dundee, and it seems likely that they occur at most sites which have a reasonable cluster of oak trees. Several colonies have also been found in Fife, where the species had not been recorded before 2011.
